Inlays & Onlays

Restoration Dentistry

In cases where extensive tooth decay is observed which cannot be treated with a simple filling or – an inlay or an onlay is used to restore the rear teeth with mild to moderate decay, but are not sufficiently damaged to need a crown. In short, inlays and onlays are used by the dentist when a filling is insufficient and a crown is too intrusive.

Inlays are custom made fillings and fit inside the cusp tips of the tooth. These are made of composite material, gold or any tooth- coloured porcelain. They can be used to repair teeth that have large defective fillings or have been damaged by decay or trauma. Defective fillings can be replaced by tooth-colored inlays and bonded to the tooth. This bonding process improves the strength of the tooth and help seal the inlay to the tooth.

An onlay restoration is a custom-made filling made of composite material, gold, or tooth-colored porcelain. An onlay is sometimes also referred to as a partial crown. It is made by a professional dental laboratory and is permanently cemented onto the tooth by your dentist. Onlays fit inside the tooth and also extend onto the chewing surface of the back tooth.
